Building Families Worldwide

The right to a family is a fundamental human right. The development and continued refinement of assisted reproductive technology over the last several decades have yielded new ways of family formation.  In countries across the globe, these scientific advances have generated ethical and legal questions about the rights of the parties to third-party reproductive arrangements and the children born of them.  Through our legal, risk management, and advisory services, The International Center for Bioethics and Third-Party Assisted Reproduction assists intended parents; gestational surrogates, ovum egg, sperm, and embryo donors; international organizations; and national and local governments and lawmakers to navigate the complexities of these issues in a scrupulously legal and bioethical manner.

Ethical and Legal Considerations

Gestational surrogacy, OVUM (egg) and sperm donation, and Embryo donation: An Ethico-Legal APPROACH

Since the birth of the world’s first “test-tube baby” in 1978, assisted reproductive technology has become increasingly sophisticated. Third-party assisted reproduction such as ovum (egg), sperm, and embryo donation and surrogacy, especially gestational surrogacy, are ever more common. At the same time, in many nations there is growing acceptance of “nontraditional” families including single parents by choice and same-sex couples. However, because legal systems change slowly and many lawmakers are uncomfortable with the ethical issues raised by third-party assisted reproduction, the law has not always kept pace with these medico-scientific and social changes. While planning a family should be a joyous occasion, uncertainty about the legal framework often engenders anxiety, fear, and confusion.

The legal process involved in third-party reproduction is widely misunderstood. Media portrayals are often inaccurate and geared at sensationalism rather than truth. Fertility clinics, hospitals, and lawmakers frequently lack a comprehensive perspective on the ethical and legal realities. Consequently, for many, the journey to third-party parenthood seems overwhelming. It is our mission to overcome confusion with clarity and transparency.

The International Center for Bioethics and Third-Party Reproduction works to make building families through third-party assisted reproduction relatively stress free. We assist clients around the globe to achieve their dream legally and ethically and advise international organizations, governments, and lawmakers on the latest developments and best practices.
